Grand Guignol: 7/16 - 8/03, 2021
IN-PERSON SHOW
featuring works by Marilou Bal, Crystal Flangan, Baris Gokturk, Madeline Kuzak, Caitlin Lapeña
The artists Mulligan have selected process daily horror through their work using a range of approaches. Like the Grand Guignol theater itself, they dissolve distinctions between high and low, whether that is in finding the transcendent beauty in a low-resolution image (Bal) or using grotesque materials (Flanagan). Madeline Kuzak’s painting recalls the Abu Ghraib prison guards, using a supernatural figure to underscore the absurdity of a very real horror. Like Bal, Lapeña’s work is both girly and cryptic, using female sexuality to prime the viewer for an ultimately unsettling narrative space. Finally, Gokturk’s flame paintings draw from Turkish protest images, freezing an instant of violent intensity into something highly mediated and distilled. "
