Reality Flex: 10/07 - 10/28, 2020
IN-PERSON SHOW
featuring work by Hilliary Gabryel, Ilana Harris-Babou, Padyn Humble, Rose Nestler, and Sophia Sobers
PARADICE PALASE is pleased to present Reality Flex, a group exhibition discussing the futility of function and absurdities of commodification in a post-contemporary era. Included in the exhibition are mixed media, soft sculpture, ceramics, and video from Hilliary Gabryel, Ilana Harris-Babou, Padyn Humble, Rose Nestler, and Sophia Sobers. The word “flex”, by definition, is a power play of sorts. It’s a chance to boast of one’s achievements. It is also defined as putting on a fake front; to exaggerate something in an effort to mask its mundanity. Each of the artists in this exhibition considers the humor in failure, especially when an object is rendered useless by those whom it was made for. Late-stage capitalism has cemented the power of individual choice. It has created a free market that sells opportunity. Opportunity for you, the buyer, to select the mint colored stand mixer instead of the grey one because maybe you love retro color palettes. When the utility of an object is second to its aesthetic, or even third also to its assumed consumer, what then is the actuality of its purpose?
