Joan Reutershan
Joan Reutershan makes boldly colored collage and assemblage paintings, taking cues from the cacophonous Brooklyn streets she traverses every day. She received her BFA summa cum laude from Hunter College, City University of New York, where she was a Kossak Painting Fellow. She earned an MA Degree in Art History, also from Hunter College. Reutershan lives in Brooklyn and works in Long Island City, NY. Making art is the way Joan explores the 21st Century urban environment--an edgy cauldron of discrepancies and contradictions, but also of transformation. If the downtown Brooklyn sky is colonized by big real estate, “on the ground” there is alternative world building in which she actively participates, and which she considers research for her art work. The cityscape is traditionally depicted as a vertical stacking of ground, architecture and sky planes. With her funky energetic jumble, a layered mixed-media assemblage full of inconsistencies, Reutershan jettisons genre convention and proposes the urban landscape as an open field of possibilities, a confabulation that is provocative, baffling, and inclusive.
