Natalie Preston
Natalie Preston (b.1998, Miami, FL) makes paintings and drawings that combine figuration, landscape, and abstraction to create fictional environments and narratives that are reminiscent of her home and the various places in which she has found herself since childhood. These spaces contain ambiguous narratives rooted in personal experiences that question and explore truth, reality, perception, and the potential for their manipulation by external factors. She edits, cuts, manipulates, conjoins, obscures, and exposes moments and memories that hold significance to her and that based on their positioning together can tell a multitude of stories. Drawing from recognizable iconography, rituals, and symbolism as well as both specific and universal landscapes, architecture, and decorative elements she hopes to anchor these narratives in a reality that viewers can connect with and use to reflect on their own past and present ways of seeing. Preston graduated in 2020 from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, where she received her BFA in Painting with a minor in Art History. Preston had her first solo exhibition, The Darkest Valley, in March of 2020 at the MICA Gateway Gallery in Baltimore, MD. She has exhibited her work at Current Space Gallery in Baltimore, MD and VisArts in Rockville, MD. She has also shown in Miami, FL at the National Young Arts Foundation. She currently lives and works in New York, NY.
